Acoustic Tracking and Signal Processing

Mikel has applied the experience of its engineers to develop unique state-of-the-art tracking and positioning systems using underwater acoustic signals and hyperbolic multilateration algorithms. This technology has been applied to perform submarine navigation updates for navigation system error correction, submarine tracking (real-time) for training exercise improvement, submarine track reconstruction in post-event analysis, UUV navigation updates for drift/error correction, and UUV track reconstruction in post-event analysis.

US Navy submarine forces

We have developed a submarine self-track capability using a single low cost bottom mounted acoustic beacon. This system the organic submarine projectors and hydrophones so there are no submarine tracking emissions during training exercises. This system provides real time onboard tracking, post event track reconstruction, and debrief capability. We are currently providing an area of coverage of 3.2 Nmi² in 300ft water depth while meeting a required position accuracy of 50 m (CEP).

US Navy MCM community

We have also used this same technology to develop an underwater positioning capability for Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs) that uses a single bottom-mounted beacon that emits coded signals’ and associated algorithms to provide positioning updates to UUVs within range. We are currently extending this capability to maintain a 30 meter (m) circular error probable (CEP) accuracy for very shallow water depths (40 feet and deeper) within 1 nautical mile, incorporating Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) performance by utilizing spread spectrum waveforms.

MIKEL’s senior engineers have come from the underwater community, where acoustic signal processing provides the “eyes and ears” for the US Navy. They have served as submariners in the Navy, or submarine combat system designers and developers, or designers of undersea acoustic tracking ranges prior to joining MIKEL. Common to all of these careers is the use of undersea acoustics. With our roots solidly in this foundation we continue to push the leading edge of technology in developing practical solutions involving underwater acoustic tracking and signal processing.
