ABC6: Local company provides GPS for Navy submarines

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) – It’s a crucial part of day-to-day military operations.

Navy submarines navigating the vast sea waters, needing to be efficient, with no room for error. Helping them achieve that, is none other than a little company in southern New England.

“We sit at the center of undersea technology development for the Navy,” said the President of Mikel Inc., Kelly Mendell.
It’s basically GPS for submarines. A first of its kind tool, being developed at Mikel Undersea Warfare Systems. These underwater beacons, dropped into the ocean, a signal is then transmitted for the Navy to track the location.

“Well, the Navy had a problem navigating during their training exercises and they came to us for a solution,” Mendell said.

These systems are already being used by the Navy, and Mendell says they are continuing to improve them.
